Recently, Jinko ESS, a leading global energy storage company and a subsidiary of JinkoSolar Co., Ltd., delivered a total of 20.06 MW / 66.33 MWh of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems in Germany for three agrivoltaics projects in Grünberg, Grünhainichen and Marbach. These projects combine agriculture, photovoltaic generation and battery storage on the same sites — a model of integrated land use.

As PV penetration rises in Germany, midday electricity prices frequently fall, at times slipping into negative territory and directly eroding project returns. Jinko ESS adopted a DC-coupled architecture that connects PV and batteries on the DC side of the PCS: when solar output peaks at midday and prices fall, surplus PV power is stored directly in the batteries, avoiding curtailment and negative-price exposure. During the evening demand peak (e.g., 18:00–19:00), the batteries discharge through inverters into the grid, shifting energy to higher-value hours and capturing peak–off-peak arbitrage.

Power and energy requirements differed across the three sites, so Jinko ESS sized capacity site by site on a standardized container platform, with per-site storage ranging from about 12.5 MWh to 40 MWh. At Grünberg, for example, the site combines an 11 MW PV plant of more than 17,600 modules with 9 MW of grid-connected output and 40 MWh of storage — capacity matched precisely to grid connection limits and local operating conditions, avoiding capacity waste and lowering initial investment.

The projects sit close to residential areas, so operational noise must stay below 75 dB (at 1 m), alongside compliance with Germany's stringent safety regulations. Jinko ESS built a multi-layer sensing and monitoring framework at the system level — covering temperature, voltage, current, gas detection and system status — to support stable operation under frequent daily cycling. Together with the customer-specified PCS supplier, Jinko ESS also completed joint validation of electrical interfaces, control logic and communications before delivery, shortening on-site commissioning.

Storage is becoming an indispensable part of renewable energy projects — storing green power when prices are low and releasing it when they are high, instead of curtailing it. As a global leader in solar and storage, Jinko ESS will continue to advance integrated PV-storage solutions as we help build the next generation of renewable energy projects in Germany.
